I know, Lake Tahoe is not in the Bay Area, but it has water and it's in California! I also got a great picture of it last year when I drove up there with friends in August.
You all know where it is. You know it's beautiful, that it has excellent skiing in the winter and boating, jetskiing, and waterskiing in the summer. You probably also know that Lake Tahoe is on the California/Nevada border, so there are gambling opportunities on the Nevada side.
Lake Tahoe is also a gorgeous place to go hiking. Just be sure to stay on the southern shore. They have much better prices, nicer (cleaner) places, and more places to eat and sleep to choose from. The North shore caters to the sports crowd. The people who want to be close to nature, and are willing to pay for it. The South shore caters to gamblers, and, well, everyone else.
Last year, Lake Tahoe's peaks still had snow in August. Considering it snowed down the 4,000 feet in May, I think the chances are good that we'll have more of the same this year. So, if you're planning to visit the always-beautiful Lake Tahoe area this summer, check the weather reports before you decide whether to bring water skis or snow skis!
