Beautiful Places in the Bay Area
Highway 1
Highway 1 stretches along California's coast from Malibu to Mendocino. It is probably the most beautiful road in the United States. My friends and I are particularly fond of the stretch between Santa Cruz and San Francisco, where the cliffs loom above you.
It's gorgeous. It's picturesque. But those cliffs that look like they're ready to crumble at any moment? They are! That's why the road is closed after every major rainstorm. (Just like Highway 9, another of our favorites!)
Despite the danger and enormous upkeep of the road (which Smithsonian Magazine pointed out in a recent issue), it is worth driving for the beautiful beaches, superb hiking trails, and quaint little communities.
Along Highway 1 between Santa Cruz and San Francisco, you'll find lighthouses, public beaches, and the city of Half Moon Bay. South of Santa Cruz, you can reach Monterey and Carmel - both great places to shop.
